H E Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi expressed congratulations on the merger of CSSC and CSIC. He said, ”CSSC is a leading enterprise in the world shipbuilding industry and has strong strength in ship research, development, design and construction. We would like to increase ties with CSSC and promote practical cooperation in various fields”. Qatar has rich oil and gas resources and holds the world’s third-largest natural gas reserves.

Lei Fanpei elaborated on the latest development of CSSC. He said, ”China and Qatar enjoy good relations and business ties. It is important for Chinese shipbuilders and Qatari energy enterprises to join hands together and seek beneficial cooperation and win-win development.

Both sides agree to enhance in-depth exchanges and promote project cooperation.

Beyond Shipping learned that before came to Beijing, the Qatari delegation visited South Korea and today marks the first meeting between Qatar energy enterprises and CSSC.

Earlier this year, Qatar authorities unveiled initial plans for a 60-LNG carrier order but orders could exceed 100 vessels. QP plans to expand the Ras Laffan LNG facility to 110mn t/yr from 77mn t/yr at present.

Industry experts said the cost of per vessel exceeds 200 million US dollars and the total value of 60 vessels could up to 12 billion US dollars.

In the recent years, Korean shipbuilders dominate the LNG newbuilding market. Among 150 LNG vessel orders, nearly 90% were won by three Korean shipyards. Hudong- Zhonghua shipbuilding also tried but with little success.

This meeting between the two sides sees the chance for Hudong-Zhonghua to fetch LNG vessel orders placed by Qatar Gas. Further, dual-fuel main engine designer WinGD, which is wholly-owned by CSSC, continues to increase the market share, beating out MAN's MEGI engine. With the integrated operation, CSSC would able to offer a more specified and complete solution to Qatar Gas.

In addition, Jiangnan Shipyard and Dalian New Shipbuilding Heavy Industry also have capabilities to build LNG vessels. This September, the launching ceremony of the world's largest LNG-fueled containership CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE was held at the Shanghai Jiangnan-Changxing Shipyard and the vessel is expected to be delivered to CMA CGM in March 2020.

If these three shipyards could fully develop their capabilities in LNG construction, in time, Chinese shipbuilders would compete with Korean shipyards.

Qatar Gas has signed a leasing contract with Shanghai Shipping on two JACK-UP which is built by Waigaoqiao shipbuilding.
