On June 27, COSCO SHIPPING commemorated the christening of the latest 21,237TEU containership at Jiangnan Shipyard. YANZI, Chinese notable tennis player, became the godmother of this mega vessel.

Named the COSCSO SHIPPING STAR, and together with her sister vessels: COSCO SHIPPING UNIVERSE, COSCO SHIPPING NEBULA, COSCO SHIPPING GALAXY, COSCO SHIPPING SOLAR, this vessel is 400 meters long and 58.6 meters wide, with a maximum draft of 16 meters, a maximum deadweight of 197,000 tons and a design speed of 22 knots.

Sources told Beyond Shipping that Wu Yuquan will be the first captain of the STAR.

To be specific, it is the fifth in the line of six ordered by COSCO SHIPPING from the Jiangnan Shipyard. The last vessel is expected to be delivered in the second half of 2019.

The order of six 21,000TEU vessels was first placed by CSCL and on May 5, 2017, COSCO SHIPPING Holdings announced to purchase 14 large ships from COSCO SHIPPING Development at the expense of 12.27 billion Chinese Yuan.

Among 14 large ships, six are the above-mentioned ships, valued 840 million US dollars.

With the integrated container businesses of CSCL and its predecessor COSCO, COSCO SHIPPING LINES aims to optimize its fleet structure and improve overall competitiveness through purchasing ships which are under construction. Meanwhile, the company also dedicates to reduce fleet operating cost and enhances its market competitiveness.

COSCO SHIPPING STAR will serve in the route from Asia to Europe (AEU1) after its delivery, which would consolidate COSCO Shipping’s competitiveness of this route and helps to optimize its global line network so as to offer a convenient, efficient and safe end-to-end transportation service to global customers. It will definitely lay a solid base for our further expanding opening-up, promoting economic globalization, trade liberalization and developing mutually profitable trade. All this will be devoted to the development of our country’s maritime power.
